    • PASSENGER NUMBERS UP 8.3% AT BELFAST CITY AIRPORT

      Wednesday 07 Oct 2009

      CITY AIRPORT BUCKS THE TREND

Passenger numbers at George Best Belfast City Airport increased 8.3% in August, one of only a few airports across the UK which recorded growth.

According to the latest figures published by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Belfast City recorded the largest percentage increase among airports carrying one million passengers or more per annum.

Belfast City carried 240,834 passengers during August, while Belfast International saw an -15.3% decrease in passenger numbers and City of Derry reported a -15.5% dip for the same period.

While many airports are recording double digit percentage declines in passenger numbers due to the economic climate, the Belfast City Airport has carried the same number of passengers as it did last year.

Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of George Best Belfast City Airport welcomed the latest figures.

"We have strong partner airlines and undoubtedly our location in the heart of Belfast is key, but so is the continuing private investment by our owners aimed at the improving the infrastructure and the customer experience.

“The airport is currently undergoing a £6 million terminal enhancement which will be completed early next year and will include a larger departure lounge and increased security search facilities to reduce queues at peak times."
