Purpose:
 
To develop and implement environmental strategies, policies and initiatives and work closely with all stakeholders.
 
The Environmental Manager will be responsible for keeping the Executive Team abreast of all key environmental requirements and lead on measures to address these and improve performance.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
1.    Environmental Management: developing implementing and maintaining the Airport’s Environmental Management System to the BS8555:2003 Phase 5 / ISO 14001 or equivalent standard involving key tasks: -
 
a.    Undertaking risk assessments
b.    Assessing legal compliance
c.     Document control
d.    Environmental auditing
e.    Environmental communications
f.      Environmental training
g.    Monitoring and reporting
h.    Driving environmental improvements across a range of areas including energy, water, waste and biodiversity
 
2.    Planning: managing compliance obligations with the airport’s Planning Agreement, coordinating technical assessments and preparation of compliance reports.
 
3.    Noise Management: oversee the operation and maintenance of the Noise & Track Monitoring System and associated reporting, develop and implement the requirements of relevant noise legislation and policy.
 
4.    Corporate Responsibility: key role in the airport’s CR committee which coordinates the airport’s community engagement programme and Community Fund, assist with corporate applications for CR external assessment and support external CR events and engagements.
 
5.    Providing expertise: keep abreast of policy and legislative changes in the areas of environment and sustainable development, provide input into government consultation responses and complete external benchmarking surveys and submissions.
 
6.    Budget: set and agree environmental budget and monitor and control any costs associated.
 
7.    Stakeholder engagement: keep all airport stakeholders updated on environmental procedures and performance.
 
8.    Environmental Leadership: represent the airport on external working groups including the NI Environmental Noise Directive Steering Group and AOA environmental group.
 
9.    Airport Consultative Committee: Assume role of Forum Secretary for the Airport Consultative Committee (the Forum) and all associated administration.

Knowledge, Skills, experience, values and behaviours:
 
Essential

  1. Environmental degree or equivalent qualification.
  2. A minimum of 3 years’ experience of environmental management in a multidisciplinary sector.
  3. Strong knowledge of environmental legislation policy and practice.
  4. Experience of devising, overseeing and managing environmental improvement programmes across a range of functions.
  5. Clear evidence of sound judgement and ability to evaluate options to make appropriate recommendations.
  6. Excellent IT skills and the ability to manage a database package to gather and monitor information to assess environmental performance.
  7. Excellent communication skills ie; the ability to rationally explain, explore, discuss and present environmental issues to a range of stakeholders.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to establish positive working relationships and influence and persuade at all levels demonstrating openness in all interactions.
  9. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships at all levels both internally and externally, treating everyone with total respect.
  10. Attention to detail and a methodical approach to working

Desirable
 
  1. Membership of a relevant professional body in environmental/ built environmental field.
  2. Practical knowledge of ISO 14001 implementation or equivalent standard.
  3. Auditing qualification and or experience of auditing.
  4. Experience of working with local communities to deliver CR activities and or professional experience in grant awarding.
  5. A positive, can do approach with the ability to work with pace and urgency while working with absolute care and striving for excellence.
