The adopted schools programme aims to utilise the expertise of the business community for the enrichment and improvement of the education provision in Northern Ireland.

Participation will enable schools to become more efficient and business-like in their approach and excellence is promoted in schools. Students, in turn are encouraged to become life-long learners, to become socially responsible citizens and meaningful participants in a culturally diverse world.

Belfast City Airport has adopted seven schools within the local area and enjoys a close relationship with Victoria Park Primary School, St Joseph's Primary School, Mitchell House School St Malachy's Primary School, Towerview Primary School and St Kevin's Primary School.

Time To Read Initiative

        Time to Read Initiative

Our 'Time to Read Initiative' is offered within school time in a group environment where local business-people read on a one-to-one basis with children, supporting their reading progress and giving them an insight into the world of work. 

In conjunction with Business in the Community, the Airport has linked up with a number of local schools including St Matthew's Primary, Holywood Primary and most recently, Knocknagoney Primary.  

School Choirs at Christmas

         Christmas at Belfast City Airport with Age NI

At Christmas time each year, Belfast City Airport invite school choirs from the Belfast area to sing carols in the terminal building and bring a little festive cheer to all our employees and passengers. We also invite members of the public who utilise the services of Age NI.

Educational Site Visits

Each year, George Best Belfast City Airport  accommodates over 20 educational visits.  Our educational visit programme is ideally suited for secondary school age and upwards Educational Site Visitsand includes a presentation in our Conference Centre with one of our Management Team followed by a brief tour of our Terminal Building including areas such as the Airline Tickets Desks, Check In and the Airport Information Desk.

Work Experience

GBBCA operates a Work Experience programme consisting of a 3 day work shadowing placement from Monday to Wednesday.  The Airport accommodates up to 60 students each year. Our Work Experience Scheme is now co-ordinated by the Charter Programme which is operated by Business in the Community and is open to anyone aged from 14 to 17 years of age and is ideally suited to those interested in pursuing a career within the Aviation Industry.

All requests for work experience should be made by contacting Joanne Mehaffy, Charter Project Manager on 02890 451444 or by emailing [email protected] Requests for work experience must be made by the School Careers teacher.  Please note requests for work experience will not be taken from students, parents, relatives, friends or any person other than the School Careers teacher.

The Airport is normally only able to take one student from any one school per week and unfortunately is unable to offer placements during public holidays or the months of July, August and December.

IOD Scheme

Belfast City Airport also work closely with the Institute of Directors in conjunction with their director shadowing scheme. This scheme aims to give young people the opportunity to learn first-hand about the role of a director or leader in a business. The airport currently facilitates one student per year from this programme.
