Release Date: 25 Nov 2010

Low cost airline bmibaby has today (25 November 2010) announced it will commence flying from George Best Belfast City Airport to Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and East Midlands Airport from 1 January 2011.

bmibaby will move its operation from Belfast International Airport to Belfast City Airport, in a move to offer more convenient services to passengers wishing to travel into Belfast.

The new bmibaby services will add to bmi’s current flights between Belfast City Airport and London Heathrow, meaning that the bmi group will become one of the largest operators from Belfast City Airport.

bmibaby will operate up to 48 flights a week from Belfast to its regional airports, with fares starting from just £9.99 one way including taxes.

With up to 9 daily departures to the UK, the low cost airline will offer a convenient morning and evening schedule suitable to both the business and leisure traveller.

Julian Carr, managing director, bmibaby, said:

“We are excited to announce that from 10 January 2011 we will commence operations from Belfast City Airport to Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and East Midlands Airport.

“This move will enable our customers to have a frequent and comfortable jet service from Belfast City Airport to key cities within the UK.

“bmibaby will offer great low fares and frequent flights, meaning the new services will work well for both business and leisure travellers looking to fly to regional airports in the UK.”

Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, Chief Executive Officer, bmi, said:

“bmi British Midland International has a long and proud connection with Northern Ireland, serving the city of Belfast for over 26 years.

“It makes obvious business sense to have the bmi group airlines serving the same Belfast airport. The group’s physical presence at the airport is also increased and customers now have an excellent range of bmi group UK destinations available from Belfast City Airport – the best choice for business and leisure travellers alike.

“The bmi group will now offer up to 89 flights a week to Heathrow and the UK regions.”
Brian Ambrose, Chief Executive of Belfast City Airport said:

“Everyone at Belfast City Airport extends a warm welcome to bmibaby. We’re delighted that bmibaby recognise the continuing investment in the airport’s infrastructure, aimed at improving the passenger experience, which we believe makes Belfast City Airport world class.

“This is great news not only for the 1,500 people employed here but the wider community who rely on the airport’s continuing success.”
