Belfast City Airport's Community Fund supports development of King's Road Nursery forest space

Date: 05 Aug 2024

Belfast City Airport’s dedicated Community Fund has enabled the development of a new forest school space at Kings Road Nursery School.

The funding provided has facilitated the creation of several key features within the space including a gathering circle, 'bug hotels' to enhance observation skills, an 'outdoor classroom' shelter to provide a dry space for activities during wet weather, and raised beds for growing vegetables, teaching children about the origins of food and gardening.

Paula Bittles, People & Purpose Executive at Belfast City Airport, commented:

"At Belfast City Airport, we are committed to promoting community engagement and supporting local initiatives that generate positive impact.

“The development of the forest school space at Kings Road Nursery School aligns perfectly with our values, creating an enhanced outdoor environment for the nursery’s young learners which promotes exploration and educational growth.

“It has been wonderful to have been able to support such a meaningful project, and we hope that the students continue to enjoy the space long into the future.”

Kings Road Nursery School is a recognised forest school, where sessions focus on fostering a connection with the natural environment, building resilience, and nurturing confidence in children.

The school's curriculum is integrated with forest school activities, incorporating a broad range of subjects and encouraging development through imaginative play.

Claire McQuillan, Principal at Kings Road Nursery, added:

"The support from Belfast City Airport's Community Fund has been instrumental in creating a dynamic and interactive outdoor learning space for our students.

“The new features have already made a significant difference in how the children engage with the environment, and we have no doubt that they will continue to enhance their observational skills and benefit from the endless opportunities for hands-on learning."

Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund, now in its 15th year, is aimed at nurturing community wellbeing, enhancing environmental sustainability, and empowering the people of Greater Belfast and North Down.

Since its inception in 2009, the Community Fund has donated over £580,000 to more than 210 local charities and community initiatives.
