Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund supports ‘Music and Me’ programme for children with autism

Date: 09 Jul 2025

Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund has provided vital funding to the 'Music and Me' programme, run by Kids Together Belfast.

Designed for those aged two to four diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder or those on their journey toward diagnosis, the programme helps children develop social skills, improve communication, and enhance emotional growth through music in a safe environment.

Grainne Loughery, Environment and Sustainability Executive at Belfast City Airport, commented:

“At Belfast City Airport, we understand the importance of investing in the community and supporting initiatives that help families thrive.

“The 'Music and Me' programme not only assists young children in developing key communication and emotional skills but also brings families closer together.

“Kids Together Belfast is doing incredible work, and we are proud to stand beside them as they help children take their first steps toward a brighter, more confident future."

The programme spans eight weeks, with the first six weeks dedicated to helping the children build essential skills such as eye contact, shared attention, sensory regulation, emotional expression, and creativity through musical play.

During the final two weeks, parents and carers join in, learning alongside the children and gaining valuable strategies to continue encouraging their child’s development at home.

Pamela Hughes, CEO of Kids Together Belfast, said:

“The funding from Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund has been instrumental in the success of the 'Music and Me' programme.

“The help from the airport allows us to offer an essential service to children with autism and their families, helping them to build strong foundations for the future.

“’Music and Me’ fosters a sense of community and provides families with the tools they need to promote their child's growth beyond the sessions.

“We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing partnership with Belfast City Airport.”

The 'Music and Me' programme is part of a wider commitment by Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund to support local initiatives that focus on improving the wellbeing of families, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing the lives of those in Greater Belfast and North Down.

Since its inception in 2009, the Community Fund has donated over £656,000 to more than 231 local charities and community organisations.
