Return of Bangor 10K - A Runway Success

Date: 06 Oct 2022

Supported by Belfast City Airport, the Bangor 10K, a long-awaited event on the Northern Irish athletics calendar, saw more than 650 runners from across Northern Ireland and beyond compete along the Bangor coastline.
This is the fourth year the Airport has sponsored the Bangor 10K, an all-inclusive event which attracts Olympians, National Marathon Champions, local athletes, new athletes, and wheelchair participants annually.
Winning the race in 29 minutes and 54 seconds, the first sub 30 minutes finishing time in the 17-year history of the most recent Bangor course, was St. Malachy’s man Ben Branagh.
Four-time Bangor 10K champion Gideon Kipsang finished in second place with a time of 30 minutes and 12 seconds, with Annadale runner Eskander Tukri completing the top three male line up, crossing the line in 30 minutes and 29 seconds.
The women’s race not only saw North Down Athletics Club runner Jessica Craig take first place but also break the tape in a new course record of 34 minutes and 39 seconds. Letterkenny Athletics Club athlete Natasha Adams secured second spot in 34 minutes and 48 seconds while Annadale’s Sarah-Jane Cooke crossed the line in 37 minutes, 46 seconds to grab a third place medal.
Forming part of the crowds lining the course to support the athletes, Neal Skelton, Duty Manager at Belfast City Airport, said:
“Belfast City Airport is thrilled to have once again partnered with North Down Athletics Club on another fantastic year of the Bangor 10K.
“Participants returned in their droves to take on this years’ race, hailed as one of the most scenic routes in Northern Ireland, including many of our own employees so it’s clear to see the race remains as popular as ever.”
Sponsorship of the race, which includes a total prize fund of over £3,400 awarded to male and female athletes in different age categories, forms just one element of Belfast City Airport’s wide-reaching Sustainability Strategy.
Neal continued:
“Community is at the heart of everything we do at the airport and the Bangor 10K is just one example of the many ways in which we support organisations around us and continue to impact our community in a positive way.”
