Traffic Information - Roadworks Throughout September and October

Date: 06 Oct 2022

Due to roadworks that are set to commence on 23rd September, there will be some disruption to the Sydenham Bypass for the next five weekends that may affect those travelling to Belfast City Airport.

To complete the £1.7million resurfacing scheme safely, it will be necessary to implement some road closures throughout this time. A breakdown of each week can be found below:

23rd to 26th September

  • Country bound lane of the Sydenham Bypass will be closed between 11pm on Friday night and 5am on Monday morning

30th September to 3rd October

  • Country bound lane of the Sydenham Bypass will be closed between 11pm on Friday night and 5am on Monday morning

7th October to 10th October

  • Country bound lane of the Sydenham Bypass will be closed between 11pm on Friday night and 5am on Monday morning

  • On this weekend, roadworks will be taking place outside the main entrance of Belfast City Airport. Therefore, it will be necessary for people travelling to the Airport to use the old entrance

  • All traffic from Westlink / M3 / Belfast City Centre will be stopped and redirected off the Sydenham Bypass at the Dee Street lights, either along the Newtownards Road or via the preferred route - Sydenham Road, Airport Road, past IKEA, and back onto Sydenham Bypass to enter from Tillysburn direction

  • All traffic leaving Belfast City Airport will have to use the city bound exit – those heading to Bangor / North Down can turn right at Dee Street and use either of the two options above and re-join the carriageway after IKEA

  • Please note that there will be a filter lane on the city bound righthand carriageway. The old entrance will be clearly sign posted with a right hand turn on your approach

14th October to 17th October

  • Country bound lane of the Sydenham Bypass will be closed between 11pm on Friday night and 5am on Monday morning

21st October to 24th October

  • Country bound lane of the Sydenham Bypass will be closed between 11pm on Friday night and 5am on Monday morning

A number of weeknight closures will also be in operation Monday to Thursday to facilitate preparatory works.

Road users, particularly those travelling to Belfast City Airport, are advised to allow extra time for their journey and follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure.

During these times a diversionary route will be clearly signed via Sydenham Road, Airport Road, Airport Rd West, Holywood Exchange, Belfast Road.

Completion of the work by 24 October is subject to favourable weather conditions, however, the public will remain informed of any change.

All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place.
