Training Courses

Belfast City Airport Fire and Rescue Service is made up of approximately 33 personnel, of which 17 personnel are qualified trainers and assessors available to deliver training internally within the airport or externally to local organisations.
 
The following is a list of courses the Airport Fire and Rescue Service can provide to staff, tenants, individuals, corporate groups and external organisations:

• First Aid Full Course

  Course Summary:
  (Approximately 15 courses per year)

  Course Overview
  Duration	This Level 3 accredited course is usually delivered over 3 days tailoring to specific needs.
  Venue	Locations GBBCA or on site with advanced arrangement
  Aims & Objectives	At the end of this course, delegates will be able to: Assess emergency situations and carry out appropriate action including informing emergency services Carry out artificial ventilation and chest compressions Place casualty into the recovery position and know to use this position Clear obstructed airway Control severe bleeding Recognise and treat shock Understand the requirements of a first aid kit and how to report accidents in the workplace Recognise and treat major illnesses Deal with burns and scolds Recognise and treat fractures Carry out the duties of a First Aider in a safe and approved manner, with no risk to self or third party.
  Course Content	Assessing the casualty and situation The unconscious casualty Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Head injuries Choking and asthma Severe bleeding Shock The first aid kit and reporting procedures· Heart attack, seizures and diabetes Burns and scolds Fractures
  Target Audience	This course is designed for anyone involved in a workplace, whether employer or employee who are required to provide First Aid in accordance with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations
  Pre-Course Preparation	This course involves theoretical and practical elements, therefore delegates will need to dress appropriately for carrying out floor-based tasks such as CPR.
  Certification	Delegates who successfully complete this course, including the practical assessments will receive Ofqual certificate from an awarding organisation valid for three years.

• First Aid Revalidation Course

  Course Summary:
  (Approximately 8 courses per year)

  Course Overview
  Duration	This is a 2 day course that can be delivered either over 2 consecutive days or one day a week over 2 weeks
  Venue	Locations GBBCA or on site with advanced arrangement

  Target Audience	This course is designed for any existing First Aider, with a valid qualification who wishes to re - qualify in accordance with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations
  Pre-Course Preparation	This course involves theoretical and practical elements, therefore delegates will need to dress appropriately for carrying out floor-based tasks such as CPR.
  Certification	Delegates who successfully complete this course, including the practical assessments will receive Ofqual certificate from an awarding organisation valid for three years.

• Emergency First Aid at Work Course
  (Approximately 5 courses per year)
  This course is ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks

  Delegates who successfully complete this course, including the practical assessments will receive Ofqual certificate from an awarding organisation valid for three years.
• Paediatric First Aid Course
  (Approximately 3 courses per year)
  
  This One day paediatric first aid course focuses on emergency scenarios that face those looking after young children and infants, including day nurseries, private nursery schools, pre-schools, before and after school clubs for children in the early years age group, childminders and carers of children at home.
  
  The paediatric first aid course meets the Ofsted Early Years and Childcare Register requirements.
  
  Who should attend?
  This course is for people working with young children and those working towards an Early Years educator qualification.
  
  What you will learn?
  Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider.
  Be able to assess an emergency situation safely.
  Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child:
  unresponsive and breathing normally
  unresponsive and not breathing normally
  foreign body airway obstruction
  external bleeding
  injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
  Understand how to administer emergency first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness:
  diabetic emergencies
  asthma attack
  allergic reaction
  meningitis
  febrile convulsions.
  Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child:
  effects of extreme heat and cold
  electric shock
  burns or scalds
  been poisoned
  bumps and bruises, small splinters and nose bleeds
  conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
  head and spinal injuries
  anaphylaxis
  shock.
  Understand how to complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies.

  Delegates who successfully complete this course, including the practical assessments will receive Ofqual certificate from an awarding organisation valid for three years.
• Automatic External Defibrillator Course
  (Approximately 20 courses per year)
  
  In the UK, one person suffers a heart attack every two minutes but the majority could be saved if their heart was shocked back into rhythm.
  
  This course teaches the essential skills required by an AED operator and gives students the confidence to know what to do in this kind of emergency. No previous first aid knowledge is necessary to attend an AED course
  
  At the end of this course, delegates will Cover:·

  CPR
  Treating an unconscious casualty utilising an AED
  Care, Maintenance and use of various AED devices
• Fire Safety Awareness

  (Approximately 10 courses per year)

  Course Overview
  Duration	1/2 Day Course

  Aims & Objectives	At the end of this course, delegates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of;·  The procedures to be followed in the event of fire How to call the fire service and liaise on site· Identify which elements need to exist for fire to occur The three basic principles of fire extinction· Identify the four classes of fire The principles and practice of fire risk assessment.· Basic fire prevention. Arson prevention. Personal protection. Which measures are designed to prevent smoke travel and fire spread in a building The need for fire safety and how to implement measures to protect yourselves, colleagues and clients Use of correct fire equipment. Evacuation procedures and the control of personnel.
  Course Content	Fire risk assessment principles and practicals  The fire triangle Heat transfer Common sources of fire Fire extinguishers. Fire Exits, Emergency Exit Routes, Signs. Emergency Lighting & Fire Alarms. Evacuation procedures. Practical extinguisher discharges. .
  Target Audience	This course is practical and theoretical course is designed for personnel who require “initial” and/or “refresher” training in fire-fighting and evacuation techniques.

• Fire Warden / Marshall Training
  (Approximately 5 courses per year)
  
  This extremely popular course provides participants with a greater awareness and understanding of the threat posed by fire, their personal responsibility in preventing an outbreak and the action to be taken should a fire occur
  
  Delegates should develop:
   
  Confidence in carrying out your fire safety responsibilities
  A greater awareness of the hazards of fire
  An understanding of the nature of fire and how it spreads
  Knowledge of the threat fire poses to people and property
  An understanding of why fire emergency procedures are implemented
  The ability to distinguish between the different types of extinguishers and the fires for which they are suited
  The ability to tackle small fires with confidence

• Manual Handling

  (Approximately 10 courses per year)

  Aims & Objectives	This course provides the necessary theoretical and practical exercises allowing staff to adopt safe lifting and handling techniques.
  Course Content	Legislation – understanding employer/employee obligations relating to manual handling. Anatomy & Spine - To gain a basic knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and function of the spine. Principles of Manual Handling - Adopt safe lifting and handling techniques. Practical Exercises -  Manual Handling techniques. Summary

• IOSH Working Safely

  (Approximately 5 courses per year)

  Course Overview
  Duration	One Day
  Venue	Locations nationwide and/or client specific
  Aims & Objectives	The course provides grounding in the essentials of health and safety. Everyone at work should have an understanding of why they must work safely and this course offers exactly that. It introduces a new approach to health and safety training by the use of state of the art animation and interactive exercises
  Course Content	Introducing working safely – stresses the realities of human suffering behind the statistics and emphasises the importance of personal responsibility. Defining hazard and risk – using familiar examples to define hazard and risk in every day language and show what can happen. Even simple or repetitive things can go wrong with serious consequences.  Delegates are asked to think about hazards and risks they come across in their own work using 6 broad hazard groups. Identifying common hazards – Use of clear examples to demonstrate the main issues such as entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise, slips, trips and falls, and manual handling. Improving safety performance – This module deals with systems and processes and tries to bridge the gap between management and the workforce, encouraging the delegates to play a part in the processes that are commonly just seen as down to their line manager or supervisor.  Also includes contract work, inspections, safe systems and permits, PPE, signage, emergency procedures, reporting and health checks. Protecting our environment – a short introduction to waste and pollution focusing on how organisations and team members can get involved in reducing environmental impacts.

• IOSH Managing Safely

  (Approximately 10 courses per year)

  Course Overview
  Duration	3 days
  Venue	Locations nationwide and/or client specific
  Aims & Objectives	To enable delegates to understand health and safety legislation and its implication to them and their workplace so that they can manage and improve health and safety within their department.
  Course Content	Safety Management– Applying basic management principles & practices to health and safety issues as part of a total management strategy. Setting achievable health and safety objectives and planning and implementing actions to achieve those objectives Reactive monitoring – legal requirements for reporting and investigating accidents including techniques. Risk assessment – identifying hazards, risks and applying control measures. Active monitoring – methods of developing checklists, schedules and monitoring of data. Review and audit Health and safety legislation – sources of information, codes of practice and main provisions of legislation. Workplace hazards -  such as work equipment, housekeeping, noise, DSE, fire, chemical safety, ergonomics etc.
  Target Audience	Designed for line managers and non-health and safety expert personnel who are in a position of managing risk and resources
  Pre-Course Preparation	None required
  Certification	Delegates who successfully complete a short answer test and practical assessment will receive an IOSH accredited certificate

• Hot Fire Training
  (Approximately 5 courses per year)
  
  Course overview:
  To provide delegates with the opportunity to practise in realistic training environments and demonstrate skills appropriate to their role within the company emergency response team.
  
  Who should attend:
  Auxiliary Fire Teams, Industrial Fire Teams, delegates involved in fire safety duties of high risk and first response.  
  
  Objectives:
  At the end of the course delegates will be assessed and given the opportunity to demonstrate their competence in utilising fire fighting equipment as part of a fire fighting team. The professional approach to the training will enable the delegate to prepare fire fighting equipment in readiness for fire fighting duties and demonstrate their ability to use the equipment safely and correctly. They will be able to compare the performance of different tactics and techniques in relation to fire spread and damage limitation and identify the importance of leadership, communication and teamwork whilst appreciating the importance of fire team safety and the maintenance of equipment.

• Confined Space Awareness Training
  (Approximately 15 courses per year)
  
  The following Confined Space Awareness training has been developed to suit all needs right across the industry spectrum from the water industry, pharmaceutical, silos, shipping, cleaning, construction and many other industries.

  Duration: 1 day
  
  Course Content and Assessment:
  The risk assessment course will enable your business to comply with the legal requirement to carry our 'suitable and sufficient' assessments of the risk related to activities. The course covers:
